Maakschap Amsterdam: Keep makers in the city!

Did you know that makers, or people who make things with their hands, helped make Amsterdam what it is today? In our city you will find individual makers, collectives, artisans and creative entrepreneurs everywhere, from large factories to small workshops. But unfortunately their future in the city is under threat. High rents and gentrification are driving them out of the city.

To ensure that makers can stay in Amsterdam, Waag, the Hout- en Meubileringscollege and Pakhuis de Zwijger have joined forces. Together they work to create visibility and a better position for makers under the European project Centrinno. The main goal is to ensure that makers do not have to leave the city and that the city does not lose the necessary makers.

Why is this important?

Well, because makers can play a key role in the goal of a circular Amsterdam in 2050. This means that we handle our materials in a smart way, so that we produce less waste. By giving space in the city to artisans and entrepreneurs, we can use the materials we have in a local way. This is an important step towards a circular Amsterdam!

To achieve this, they will talk to developers, politicians, researchers and makers about what they can do in the short and long term to improve the livelihoods of makers. They are also launching ‘Maakschap Amsterdam’, a cozy community where makers can learn from each other and work together to create a stronger and more sustainable maker climate.

So let’s make sure makers can stay in Amsterdam and make our city even more beautiful with everything they can make!
